RFID : The less expensive and open source kind.

The buzz around RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) seems to have lessened from what it was a few years ago, but I recently came across two interesting software developments in this space : Open Beacon and Open PCD .

The Open -- as in open source software -- really seems like a breakthrough in the software distribution sense for RFID systems. From what I have read and heard, most RFID projects run a hefty price tag when it comes to software licensing, which places the mere thought of opening up -- read 'give away' -- the logic behind such systems an interesting shift.

Both projects are getting started, but one already has a success under its belt, as part of an Active 2.4Ghz RFID system , tracking and reporting the movements of over 1000 devices, with a very low-cost of ownership especially when compared to the multi-million dollar RFID technology solutions that normally get the most exposure.

Kudos to the project leaders behind Open Beacon and Open PCD for opening up their code base for other to reuse. A worthy look for any organization planning to build an RFID type system, without writing everything from scratch or breaking the bank in the process.
